Band Practice

Week #4
Band Practice

I went on wednesday evening to watch and obserce a band pracitce for the church worship service on Sunday morning. It was very interesting to say the least. I had been to band practices before and for the most part it was what i was expecting it to be. They first prayed when we got in there and then started to go over the songs that they were going to be playing. The drums there that they play are electric and i personally am not a fan of but that is besides the point. After going through there playlist of songs they went over basically how the songs were going to go in order and what would be happening in between them and anything else that was scheduled that they needed to know about sunday morning. For the most part it was pretty routine and not much more than i was expecting. It was interesting to see how intentional again the songs are and even the way that they play the songs because there are so many different people that go to the church that it must be consistant for the most part and also pleasing. I had never really thought about that before so that was kind of interesting for me to learn about.

Weekly report #6

This week I was supposed to spend my time on a wednesday night watching a choir practice for my church here in IN Lakeview. The reason for doing this early in the week is because was not going to be at the service on Sunday because I was heading back to good ol Michigan for Fall Break. The night of the worship pastor cancelled practice because of the very few people who would have shown up for it. So instead I went home and helped at my home church, Cavarly Baptist. There I greeted people on Sunday morning...............What a fun job I must say. My face started to hurt because i had to smile so much. It is very interesting though because you set the tone for that person walking into the church. Your smiling face and warming open hand is the firs thing that they see. It was interesting though to say the least. I could tell the people that were just so happy to be there and thrilled to be at church and then there were others who really could careless or had stuff going on in thier life and did not want to be there at all, but knew church is the place to be. There are so many different people that go to my church that I never knew. My church is a little small and i thought that I knew most people, but as a greeter, you meet EVERYONE!! My experience was fun and i would happily do it again.

Sitting with Sound board tech

It was a very interesting experince to sit with him during the morning service. I really have had no experience with a sound board so basically everything was new to me. At first I felt a little weird because I have never been any where else but a pew and for me to be up at the sound board and paying attention but not really paying attention. I will say that it is a different kind of attention. He has to make sure that everything sounds good and power point in cued and everything tech wise is running smoothly. Normally I would be just sitting there singing and thinking nothing of what else was going on except worshiping God. So at first i was a little weirded out by it, but I was able to get used to it.
While worship was going on I did not realize that all those buttons on that big board actually all were very important to making the band, guitar or whatever it may be sound good. It would truly take me a couple day it seemed to learn what all those things did. Mostly I learned what the "main" was that controled the sound and how to turn mics on and off. It was all around a pretty cool experience to be apart of and I am glad that I did it.
As a result of this observation I learned that it how crucially important running the sound board and making sure that everything runs smoothly can make or break a service. If the band sounds bad it is going to be very hard for the congregation to pay attention or truly give themselves to God. If powerpoint is not practice or on cue how are they going to know what to sing? There are so many little things that seem to be so important and if overlooked can be detrimental!

Week #2 as of now

I had my discussion with my worship pastor and it went really well. We talked about how he prepares for the gathering and what that all entails. It was very interesting to see how intentional everything that he does really is and how he puts things together. I was very interested and i am going to go back and have some more conversation about his gathering service setup. other than that things have been going very well and i am excited about this practicum and the things i will learn
